This lively show is pretty typical of the Blossoms' three-month college tour. It aired on several radio stations across the country, although not every station played the entire show. It's also available on two different bootlegs: "Hard On It," a 2-CD set from KTS that also contains three "bonus" acoustic tracks (recorded 2/9/96 in New York City), and "A Beautiful Night," a single CD from Moonraker. Versions of "Allison Road" and "Whitewash" from this concert also appear as b-sides to the "As Long As It Matters" CD single.

"Just Passin' Through," Omega Studios, Rockville, MD--March 21, 1996

A really fun set recorded for Washington DC radio station WHFS during the Blossoms' 1996 college tour. It was broadcast on 3/25/96 for the station's "Just Passin' Through" series. The version of "Mrs. Rita" recorded during this session is also available on HFS' "Just Passin' Through" CD, which benefits Health Care for the Homeless in DC. (It also features Toad The Wet Sprocket, Matthew Sweet, Goo Goo Dolls, PJ Harvey, Catherine Wheel, Jewel, and others.)

 Running Time: about 30 minutes.

Toad the Wet Sprocket at The Rock, Tucson, AZ--October 17, 1994

Toad and the Gin Blossoms are old buddies--the Blossoms opened for Toad in 1992. At this concert in Tucson, several Blossoms made guest appearances: Scott plays on "Cinnamon Girl," Phil plays and Robin sings lead on Toad's "All I Want." If you're into Toad at all (and you certainly should be) this concert is wonderful!

Toad allows taping of their shows (as long as it's not for profit), so this is actually a legal recording. The sound quality is very good for an audience recording. Of course, the quality will also depend on how many generations away from the original your copy is. This tape can be somewhat difficult to find, because you have to know someone who has a copy. The tape has also made its rounds on Toad's mailing list. Check out the House of Toad for info on how to join the list.

Running time: about 90 minutes.
Track listing:

"Live X," Cat's Paw Studio, Atlanta, GA--September 23, 1994

While the Blossoms were in Atlanta on the Spin Doctors tour, they played an acoustic set for broadcast as part of radio station 99X's "Live X" series. It was a really nice set, if you can find someone who taped it off the radio.

Running Time: about 20 minutes.
Track Listing:

    Until I Fall Away

    Mrs. Rita

    Allison Road

    Found Out About You

Farm Aid IX, Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans, LA--September 1994

This show was recorded for the Westwood One radio series, "In Concert." The original CDs used by radio stations are sometimes offered by collectors in Goldmine magazine. This show in particular is worth looking for on the original CD--many of the radio stations that aired the show (those that weren't part of the "In Concert" series) were using at least a third-generation tape. The sound quality on the original CD is excellent. The concert itself is short but pretty good, with nice live versions of some of the popular New Miserable Experience songs.

"In Concert"--Westwood One
Gin Blossoms/Ian Moore #95-12 (broadcast the week of 3/13/95)
Running Time: about 40 minutes.
Track Listing:

    Hold Me Down

    Mrs. Rita

    Idiot Summer

    Until I Fall Away

    Hands Are Tied

    Cajun Song

    29

    Allison Road

    Hey Jealousy

Tramway Theatre, Glasgow, Scotland--April 9, 1994

This is a bootleg tape that's probably only available in the UK. Radio 1 aired this concert live at Glasgow's Tramway Theatre for Sound City. It's a fun show... Robin was very chatty.

 Running time: about 45 minutes.
Track listing:

    Hold Me Down

    What (?)

    Mrs. Rita

    Idiot Summer

    Henry VIII

    29

    Hands Are Tied

    Cajun Song

    Found Out About You

    Keli Richards

    Christine 16 (Kiss cover)

    Allison Road

    Hey Jealousy

The Metro, Chicago, IL--April 1993

A great show, recorded for Chicago radio station WXRT's "Sunday Night Concert" series. The only legitimate release from this show (unless you taped it off the radio) is the version of "Hey Jealousy" on the station's annual compilation CD "OnXRT," which was only available in the Chicago area.

There are two different bootleg CDs that include part of this show: "Goodbye Douglas Hopkins--WXRT Live Broadcast" and "In Bloom." "GDH" is the entire show as broadcast on WXRT, and the sound quality is is comparable to the radio broadcast (pretty good). It has a band photo on the cover and photos of the Grand Canyon inside. "In Bloom" is very good sound quality, slightly better than "GDH," but only contains about half of the Chicago show. The rest of the tracks on the CD are from the Solana Beach show described below. "In Bloom" is an Italian bootleg from KTS. It has a band photo on the cover, and the rest of the artwork is some very nice pictures of autumn leaves and flowers. It's also a picture CD.

"Goodbye Douglas Hopkins--WXRT Live Broadcast" bootleg.
BLY #001 (no idea what that means...sorry)
Running Time: 57 minutes.
Track Listing (tracks marked with a * are included on "In Bloom"):

The Belly Up Tavern, Solana Beach, CA--1993

This show was recorded for the Westwood One radio series, "In Concert." The original CDs used by radio stations are sometimes offered by collectors in Goldmine magazine. (The "In Concert" broadcasts come in two-CD sets, one for each artist.) There's also a bootleg CD called "Small Club." The cover is white with a bottle of "Gin Blossoms Extra Dry" on the front. The sound quality is good for the most part, except for three "bonus tracks" (Allison Road, Hold Me Down and Mrs. Rita) from some other unidentified show. Those tracks are mediocre quality.

A few tracks from this show also appear on the "In Bloom" bootleg CD mentioned above (the rest of that CD is from a 1993 Chicago show). In addition, some import singles released from New Miserable Experience contain tracks from Solana Beach as live b-sides (Hold Me Down, Mrs. Rita, Hey Jealousy, Folsom Prison Blues, 29, Hands Are Tied). The b-side tracks have excellent sound quality.

 "Small Club" bootleg.

Europe--1993

This tiny little show, recorded somewhere in Europe in 1993, is available on a CD bootleg called "Hey Jealousy." The sound quality is pretty good, and it has some GREAT songs on it. (A "Dead Skunk" / "Henry VIII" medley, for example.) The cover is blue with a picture of dandelions, broken up sort of like a puzzle.

 "Hey Jealousy" bootleg.
Fight Back Records (#007), Germany.
